Young Democratic leaders and activists from across California have announced their support of Rusty Hicks for Chair of the California Democratic Party, indicating his strong commitment to diversity, increasing representation, and demonstrated ability to elect progressive candidates.
“Rusty’s transformative leadership at the LA Labor Fed has forged a progressive path for California’s working people and has empowered diverse segments of our communities to be heard,” said Jenny Bach, Secretary of the California Democratic Party. Ms. Bach was elected to the CDP Executive Board in 2017, as the youngest statewide Party official to win a seat at the table in decades. “Rusty’s proven track record of winning through empowerment, inclusivity, and coalition building will put our Party in the best position to address the issues we face today, in the 2020 elections, and beyond. This is why I will be voting for Rusty for CDP Chair.”
Rusty currently serves as President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, which is comprised of more than 300 local unions that represent 800,000 workers. As leader of the of the Fed, Rusty committed to and succeeded in making historic gains in elevating women and people of color to leadership positions (who now comprise 60% of the body’s leadership), and increasing youth representation, with 25% of the Fed leadership now under the age of 45. At the LA Fed, Rusty helped lead the “Fight for 15” campaign, first in LA then statewide, he created a jobs training program for formerly incarcerated women and men and placed them in union jobs, he advocates for “Medicare for All” including undocumented immigrants, and worked to strengthen worker protections against sexual harassment and assault.
“Heading into the 2020 elections — with a contentious Presidential election and so many seats in California we need to defend to keep our House majority — we need a strategic and measured voice to lead the California Democratic Party,” said Congresswoman Katie Hill (CA 25). “That’s why I am proud to support Rusty Hicks for CDP Chair. Rusty has proven that he can leverage his position as a respected labor leader to organize the grassroots and elect people who will make affordable health care, access to housing and rebuilding the middle class a top priority. I look forward to working with him to improve the lives of all Californians.”
Among Rusty’s many Democratic campaign efforts—including taking a leave of absence from the LA Fed in 2008 to serve as the Obama campaign’s California Political Director–Rusty proved instrumental in unseating Republican U.S. Representative Steve Knight in California’s 25th district. Leading a coalition to educate the area’s constituents on their Representative’s latest votes and positions on each and every issue, Rusty helped pave the way for the successful flipping of the seat in last year’s midterm elections, when Democrat Katie Hill took the seat as the area’s next U.S. Representative–the first time a Democrat had won the seat since the early 1990s. Representative Katie Hill now serves as the third youngest member of Congress.
“Rusty Hicks has the knowledge, plan, and vision to lead the California Democratic Party,” said the Latinx Young Democrats of Orange County, upon announcing their endorsement of Rusty. “As an organizer, and head of the Los Angeles Labor Federation, Rusty has shown his ability to bring people together and empower the voices of people of color. Latinx Young Democrats of Orange County are proud to stand with Rusty Hicks for Chair!”
“With Rusty’s impressive record in fighting for working class people and his goals for targeting the Central Valley in the 2020 election, we believe he is the best candidate for the job,” said the Fresno County Young Democrats. “We proudly endorse Rusty Hicks for Chair of the CDP!”
